Community Cohesion

Eidfest

What is the project?

In 2008 we held our first Eidfest to celebrate the Islamic festival of EID with the wider community in order to help create a better understanding of Islam and the issues faced by young Muslims. The event took place in the Indian YMCA off Warren Street  and was attended by over 300 guests and community members.  The evening consisted of a variety of acts on stage, a lively debate, the screening of three films made by members about their experiences.  We got great feedback from all those attended, so much so that it has become an annual event.

What is the need for the project?

TThe findings from our Muslim peer research project identified the need for young Muslims to be able to share their culture and experiences with others, as well as have opportunities to debate issues affecting them. The project also highlighted the importance of recognising the contribution young Muslims make to the community and providing opportunities for young people to promote a better understanding of Islam.

What are the benefits of the project?

The event gives an opportunity for the community to celebrate positive young Muslims. It helps eradicate ignorances that exist within the community have of Muslims and more importantly young Muslims. Youth participants have the chance to work with other youths from various backgrounds to promote a positive message on behalf of young Muslims. Youth participants gain skills in event management, presenting, performing and much more.

Who is the project open to?

The project is open to youths and adults alike. We are always looking for organisers, stewards, performers, sponsors and much more.
