Community Cohesion
Fitzrovia Street Parties
Quote from resident:
‘Having regular community events helps bring the community together. For example at our annual street parties, people can drop in, chat, introduce themselves to people you might have recognised in the street. The fact that the street gets closed off for our events makes you feel part of something’.
What is the Project?
Since 1999, Fitzrovia Youth in Action organises annual street parties and community dinners to bring together young people that spend time in the Warren play area with the residents who live close-by. These events are very popular with local residents and young people, with around 300 attending every year.
Young people organise all aspects of the event including hosting and performing on stage, serving food and drinks, and setting up & cleaning. The aim of the project is
Members of Fitzrovia Youth in Action have also organised other one off events, aimed at bringing together young people and local residents, for example a garden party in Fitzroy Square and Residents’ Meal for residents from Gordon Mansions.
What is the need for the project?
As with many of our projects we continuously look to improve realtions between local youths and residents. Furthermore local businesses get the opportunity to get to know the community on a more personal level through the street party. Over the years, young people have planned and delivered a number of street parties to bring together local residents and young people.
What are the benefits of the project?
Organising a street party involves many months of preparation.
- Young people get involved in organising the food, entertainment, equipment, hosting, raffle prizes, invitations and general planning on the day.
- Relations between residents, youths and local businesses improve greatly.
- Youths get to perform on the day and show their talents.
- The day is fun and one to remember!
Who is the project open to?
The project is open to youths and adults alike. We are always looking for organisers, stewards, performers, sponsors and much more.
