On Monday 25th July 2011, the first day of the summer holidays, hundreds of youngsters from across Camden and Islington came together to take part in the prestigious Camden Unity Cup. The tournament is one of the borough’s oldest five-a-side football competitions, and has been running for over 10 years.
Organised jointly by Fitzrovia Youth in Action, Highgate Newtown Community Centre and the Somali Youth Development and Resource Centre, the competition once again proved a huge success. A total of 49 teams battled it out in four different age categories in a bid to win the Camden Unity Cup.
Teams showcased their skills at the Cantelowes Football Pitch on Camden Road, as the tournament was kicked off by the Under 10’s and 12’s. After the morning matches, Maiden Lane FC was crowned the Under 10’s champions, after beating Copenhagen Youth Project 2-0 on penalties. The Under 12’s final was contested by rivals Camden Select and Somers Town, with Camden Select edging the game by a single goal to win 1-0.
The Under-14s age group saw visitors Stewards Road FC, from south London, crowned champions after beating West London Futsal. Meanwhile in the Under-16s final, it just took a single goal to snatch the title as Soc Bluwoo beat Fitzrovia Youth in Action in a very entertaining final.
For the awards presentation, MP Frank Dobson, Leader of the Council Nasim Ali, Superintendent Raj Kohli, the Mayor of Camden Councillor Abdul Quadir, and a local Councillor, said a few words in support of the project and helped to give out the trophies to the winning teams and runners up.
