Community Christmas Dinner 2014
On 22nd December, young people entertained over 250 local residents at an amazing afternoon of celebrations at our Community Christmas Dinner, held in partnership with the Bengali Workers’ Association (BWA).
Organised and hosted by young people, the event was a great success which brought together all sections of the community from across Fitzrovia and West Euston The hall and balconies at the Indian YMCA in Fitzroy Square were full to capacity. Guests were treated to an array of entertainment, including singers, dance groups, magic and games. Among the performers was West Euston dance group Mix It. They performed several fast-paced routines involving dancers of all ages and the audience even joined in the dancing too. Our three young solo performers captivated everyone with their renditions of seasonal and popular songs.
The event was organised by a steering group of young people based at the Surma Centre who worked really hard over three months to plan the event and host on the day.
As well as providing hosting and entertainment, young volunteers also served a full Christmas dinner to all our guests. Our stewards supported the whole event by assisting guests and decorating the hall beforehand. “I live in central London and have never seen an event of this scale before,” said a local resident. “It was especially great to see so many young people helping the older guests and making sure they were okay.”
We would like to thank everyone who attended and all the young volunteers and staff who helped to put the event together. If you’d like to re-live the Community Christmas Dinner, check out our fantastic video of the event below, featuring behind the scenes footage, performances and guest interviews.
