On 16th and 17th May FYA held our Community Planting events, and they were incredibly successful!
85 people participated in our street refresh, from local residents, to local business volunteers, to young people, which culminated in a free BBQ on the second day. The event was supported by People’s Postcode Lottery Trust and Regent’s Place.
Two streets of residents planters were completely refreshed and we were able to ensure the project was sustainable and environmental by transplanting healthy plants from the established planters to the Whitfield Street Play Area.
We were supported at the event by brilliant corporate volunteers from local organisations Global Generation, Engie, Xcede, Sanderson, Regents Place and Digital Cinema Media.
The Youth Events Team worked with Fitzrovia Youth in Action for 6 weeks designing the promotional material, undertaking risk assessments and site planning. They also delivered briefings to volunteers on the day and led on the creation of a film you can see here
Our Camden Champions, a group of young people enabling youth voice in local decision making and health services and raising awareness of mental health and wellbeing, also created the first in their series ‘ Top Tips for Wellbeing,’ with this one Being Outdoors. They gave away 50 small plants to volunteers and local residents as part of the event.
We have had a number of comments and thanks from local residents and businesses based along Warren Street and Whitfield Street. One in particular wrote us a letter; ‘Enclosed is a small contribution to your planting which I so much appreciate, not only for improving the look of the neighbourhood but for also engaging young volunteers in a community project and to interest them in greening, Fitzrovia Youth in Action indeed! Your effort is truly valued.’
Thank you to everyone involved and we hope the refresh brightens up your summer.
