FYA held our Community Planting events on 29th and 30th May 2019, and it was a great success!

67 people participated in the Community Planting 2019: 31 young people, 26 corporate volunteers, 10 local residents and FYA staff came together across the two days to improve the local environment on Warren Street and Whitfield Street. The area was refreshed with over 300 plants in both the Warren Play Area and in local resident planters.

As part of the two days, we also had a Community Clean-Up Campaign. This included removing graffiti, sweeping the streets, litter picking and cleaning the play apparatus and benches – this resulted in over 60 bags of recycling and rubbish bags!

We received a number of positive comments and feedback from local residents and businesses along Warren Street and Whitfield Street, as well as some of the public walking by. Two of the residents hugged volunteers after they cleared their basement, which had been impacted by the large street bins outside their property, whilst other local residents commented ‘I think this is the best one yet – not only do we get to enjoy these lovely plants, but the clean-up has been great.

Volunteers commented “the best thing about the event was meeting new people and sharing common goals with them, being social and close to nature,” whilst another stated “it feels good to do some good for others and the sense of giving back to the community.” Another commented that ‘it was great being involved with activities and events created and run by young people, who are the future’ and that the best thing was ‘seeing the area improve on how it looks’ after the planting event.  96% of volunteers said that they have met new people at the event that they did not know before and 100% reported an increase in community belonging.

The event was organisied by a steering group of young people across 8 weeks who were passionate about improving the area for the local community. They designed the promotional material, site planning and undertook risk assessments for the event, gaining Events Management Level 1.

You can see a gallery from the day below and here is a film all about the two days!

We were supported at the planting event by amazing groups of corporate volunteers from these local organisations:
