On Saturday 5th September, we celebrated our 18th birthday at the annual Fitzrovia Street Party and Community Dinner, along with 300 members of the local community. The steet party brought together
young people, local residents and other supported to enjou live performances and celebrate 18 years of youth action since our launch in 1997.
The event was planned by a steering group of young people, who had spent 12 weeks organising the party, from publicity to decorations to booking performers. On the day, they were joined by 40 other young people volunteering as event stewards. The stewards were responsible for customer service, serving food, supervising activities, site management and hosting on stage.
The stage had a packed schedule, featuring exclusive performances from local young people and groups in Camden, including B-Better dance and the Roundhouse. We were also excited to have the debut performance from FYA’s first dance group. Despite only having a few practice sessions, the group did an amazing breakdancing routine which captivated the audience.
Food was provided by the local Agra Restaurant, who cooked a delicious selection of curries and chicken finished off on the BBQ.
The highlight of the street party was the FYA 18th birthday cake – a huge handmade iced sponge cake which had been carefully made by FYA staff members. The cake was carried through the crowd by young people, followed by a procession of stewards modelling street party t-shirts from over the past ten years. Everyone joined in to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ and it was a great ending to a fantastic event.
